I believe him when he says writing, writing as well as he did, was hell. He says he is reading a great deal now, mostly non-fiction about historical periods and events that interest him. I suspect whatever he is doing he is actively involved. Perhaps he is relieved to not have to write anymore and just enjoys going for long walks and spending time with the people he loves.
