I have the house to myself today - I can indulge in Steiner at length.Lindahttps://commonplacefortheuncommon.com/noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8215036862051955994.post-17552651242202610252017-07-04T05:55:01.968-10:002017-07-04T05:55:01.968-10:00Thank you, Linda. Always keep studying; that is sufficient. And it is also important to point out that studying and intellectual pursuits is not restricted to the People of the Book. Reading A Long Saturday is a good way to get to know George Steiner.Richard Katzevhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03466537940588392927noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8215036862051955994.post-60564505816761576502017-07-04T05:47:38.467-10:002017-07-04T05:47:38.467-10:00Wonderful, inspiring post. The issues you highlight are issues that have fascinated me for many years.

I agree with you on Jewish exceptionalism in all things cerebral - I marvel at it. I do think it has to do with, as you said, constantly being a student, searching for wisdom, which seems to be a Jewish trait. I also think it has to do with survival in the diaspora over so many generations - studying the law for self-protection, a tradition of deeper intellectual pursuits which produces a subtlety of mind, a mastery of inference, a kind of unique intellectual virtual circle that grew out of segregation and persecution. Who knows? A mystery as you say - a most admirable one.

Steiner's work is impressive - what a mind. He is worthy of study.

Lindahttps://commonplacefortheuncommon.com/noreply@blogger.com
